Meet Ms. Underhill

Ms. Norma Underhill is our third and fourth grade teacher here at Pittsburg School.  She grew up in Clarksville, NH on Ben Young Hill Farm along with her brother and sister.  Currently she has four chickens and a duck named “Elvis”!  Growing up she enjoyed playing games like checkers, Monopoly, Clue, PacMan and Pictionary.

The Story of Ferdinand the Bull by Munroleaf was Ms. Underhill’s favorite childhood story.  She says, “I could relate to Ferdinand who didn’t like to butt heads with anyone but preferred just sitting and smelling the flowers.”

Ms. Underhill actually went to Pittsburg School herself where her favorite subject was science class with Mr. Pinci.  She related, “I can’t recall one particular [science] project, but I loved going on field trips during chemistry and physics class with Mr. Pinci, our science teacher.”  In school, she played basketball.

Following high school, Ms. Underhill attended Keene State College.  She enjoyed making new friends while in college and also working at Aspire.  She state, “My favorite art project was during college.  I did a self baby portrait in pen and ink.  My mom still has it hanging in her hallway.  I used one of my favorite baby pictures to go by.”

Ms. Underhill has one dog named Ginger, a new kitten that moved in after Christmas (she named it Chicklet), and lots of fish.  She said her favorite holiday is Christmas and she said, “[My favorite holiday food is] fruit cake.  Seriously! Best birthday cake ever!” (Did you know Ms. Underhill’s birthday is on Christmas?) Steve Martin is her favorite comedian, and she said the Smurfs are her favorite cartoon because, “I can relate to them.”

Ms. Underhill is active in the community in many different ways.  She is one of the Key Club advisors and is also a member of the Farnham Memorial United Methodist Church.  She does whatever she can to help when the church has special fundraisers and projects.  She also takes part in activities on the Fourth of July, Old Home Day, and the Moose Festival.

When going on vacation, her favorite destination is the Turks and Caicos Islands.  When describing that area, she said, “It is small and usually quiet [with] great beach areas and [it’s] sunny!”  Asked what she liked best about her life, Ms. Underhill responded, “Spending time with my family.”

Before coming to work here at Pittsburg School Ms. Underhill was a special education teacher at Colebrook Elementary School and before that she taught at St. Albert Catholic School teaching fifth and sixth grade.  Here at Pittsburg School Ms. Underhill loves the students saying, “We’re like a big family.  I don’t have children of my own, so the kids at school really do make my day.”  Her personal motto is, “Don’t say can’t.”
